The Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is an exceptional example of ‘elegant Volnay’ at it’s best. This wine is succulent and the tannins are soft. This vintage represents how Gaunoux wines can last a long time if cellared correctly.
The village of Volnay is located on the hillside, in the heart of the vineyards and faces East, South-East. The soil contains limestone (more than Pommard) with a subsoil of marl and clay. These elements in the soil create elegant yet powerful wines.
The appellation Clos des Chênes is dark red in colour ; it’s bouquet is rich in red fruit, woody and is a powerful wine yet elegant – perfectly balanced. Once aged, the nose is full of truffle and violet.
About the Wine Maker
One of Burgundy's best kept secrets is this domain, which has been run by Claudine Gaunoux since the late 1990s. Throughout the year, she works meticulously in the vineyards to prune and tackle potential plant and grape problems at the source. As a result, Claudine harvests only the best grapes, which are then vinified and matured in stainless steel tanks. 'Wood is make-up for bad wines' is her adage. The fact is that her wines - with pure fruit flavors and minerality - are different from others. And as the connoisseurs know, Gaunoux's wines can be stored for a brilliantly long time.
