Northern Rhone footprint
This 100% Syrah comes from various vineyards in the Northern Rhone valley: a part around the village of Cornas and a part situated north of Tain l'Hermitage. Because of the different soil compositions (ranging from granite to granite-rich sandy soils and sedimentary terroir) this wine has a typical Northern Rhone character: Full in flavours and fruit-intensity, with classical spices and peppery tones, as well as a supple structure making the wine nicely drinkable at a young age.
Traditional winemaking method
After the harvest the grapes are 100% destemmed. Then the wine is being made using traditional methods: 20% of the wine is fermented in large barrels (demi-muids) and 80% in cement tanks. After that the ageing takes place for 30% in demi-muids and 70% in cement, for roughly 6 months. Annually an average of 15,000 bottles are being produced.
About the wine maker
Domaine Ferraton was founded in 1946 by Jean Ferraton, and under the leadership of son Michel, good vineyards were purchased in Hermitage, Saint Joseph and Crozes Hermitage. The vineyards have been biodynamically maintained since 1998 and a number of vineyards are therefore Demeter certified. Since 2005, Domaine Ferraton is part of M. Chapoutier, who has invested heavily in new wine cellars and cuverie. The domain mainly focuses on making terroir specific "single vineyard" wines. Today, Ferraton's Rhone wines can compete with the best, given the high scores of well-known wine critics.
